Last season did not exactly go as planned for Russell Wilson. After signing with the New York Giants, Wilson started just three games before he was replaced by rookie Jaxson Dart. Now, he’s looking for a new team, and it sounds like he could end up in a surprising location.

After going 0-3 as a starter during his time in New York before he was ultimately replaced, Russell Wilson will not be returning to the Giants. As he enters free agency, the veteran quarterback will be looking for a new team.

While there aren’t many teams – if any – that would be looking to sign Wilson to be their full-time starting quarterback this upcoming season, Wilson could find himself in an intriguing position with a team in need of a capable backup or a short-term starter to begin the season.

As a result, Greg Auman of Fox Sports had quite an intriguing prediction for where Wilson might land: the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Wilson, 37, has fallen hard over the last three years, going from a $40 million starter in Denver to barely playing on a bad Giants team. He went 0-3 as a New York starter, and after making $10 million this past season, he might draw half that. His best scenario is likely a bridge starter who goes to a team with a young starter so they don’t have to rush him. Go back to 2024, he had 16 touchdowns against five interceptions while going 6-5 for the Steelers, and that’s the hope for a team that brings him in as a stopgap,” Auman wrote in a post for Fox Sports.

Obviously, the Chiefs do not need a full-time starting quarterback with Patrick Mahomes on the roster. However, there is no guarantee that Mahomes will be ready to play by the start of the season after suffering a torn ACL back in December.

Wilson could be a solid insurance option in case Mahomes is not ready for the start of the season or when the team begins the preseason, adding a veteran presence to the roster as they prepare for 2026.

Additionally, the Chiefs do find themselves in need of a capable backup quarterback after losing veteran Gardner Minshew to the Arizona Cardinals in free agency, so Wilson would be able to fill that void, as well.

We’ll have to see whether or not this ultimately happens, but this move would seem to make sense.
