Last season, veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew took over as the Kansas City Chiefs’ starting quarterback after Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL. Now, it sounds like he’ll be leaving the team.
With 47 starts throughout his career, Minshew was one of the most experienced and veteran backup quarterbacks in the league and the Chiefs undoubtedly would have liked him to remain with the team to back up Mahomes for another season, but it sounds like they have lost him to another team.
On Monday afternoon, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Gardner had agreed to a deal with the Arizona Cardinals, leaving the Chiefs after just one season with the team.
Minshew’s deal with the team will be a one-year, $8.25 million contract as he is set to become the backup quarterback for starter Jacoby Brissett.
For the past seven seasons, former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray has served as the starting quarterback of the Cardinals, but the team decided to part ways with the veteran quarterback this offseason, moving forward with Brissett as the starter.
While Minshew is not expected to compete with Brissett to be the starter in Arizona, he will add a lot of veteran experience to the team as a backup.
With Minshew now leaving the Chiefs, the team will have to figure out another option behind Mahomes. Currently, the team has Jake Haener and Chris Oladokun on the roster, but they could look to bring in a more veteran backup ahead of the season.
We’ll have to see how the Chiefs decide to bolster the quarterback position in the coming weeks.
