Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham (8) warms up before a game Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has refused to bash the United States of America, and one conservative commentator has taken notice.

Cunningham joined the Fever last year after she was acquired by way of a trade with the Phoenix Mercury. Shortly after the trade, she made it pretty clear just how excited she was to play alongside WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark.

In her opening press conference, she went as far as to compare Clark to pop sensation Taylor Swift and herself to Sabrina Carpenter, who served as one of Swift’s openers on the “Eras Tour.”

“I told people upstairs I will be her Sabrina Carpenter any day to her Taylor Swift,” Cunningham said at the time. “I am so excited for this. I just think that she’s a great human too. She’s got a lot of pressure [on her shoulders] and a lot of eyes on her and she just nails it so gracefully and she’s just a great human so I’m just excited to be a part of something like that.”

Recently, Cunningham attracted some attention from one prominent conservative commentator for her view on the United States, even during a difficult time.

In a social media post this week, Danielle D’Souza Gill, who is a conservative commentator and the wife of U.S. Congressman Brandon Gill, made a comment about Cunningham’s view of the country amid the conflict with Iran.

“Basketball star Sophie Cunningham has refused to bash America, instead thanking our veterans,” Gill wrote of Cunningham. “‘Home of the free because of the brave … Thank you to all those who fought and are still fighting,’ God bless you, Sophie!”

Seemingly confirming what Gill wrote about her, Cunningham actually shared the post on her Instagram story.

Clearly, Cunningham is an unabashed supporter of the United States, even at a time when criticizing the country has been quite popular.
