Critics have long tried to argue that there isn’t as much interest in the WNBA as people want there to be. However, all signs continue to point to just how popular the professional women’s basketball league has become and Sabrina Ionescu’s latest record-breaker is further proof of that.
According to TMZ Sports, the New York Liberty star now owns the most expensive WNBA card ever as her 2020 rookie card was purchased for $10,800 during an auction on Sunday.
The 2020 Panini Prizm WNBA Black Gold rookie card, in gem mint condition, shows Ionescu smiling while she dribbles a basketball in her Liberty jersey.
The former Oregon Ducks star has been breaking records all year. She broke the WNBA record for the highest-scoring triple-double this past season when she recorded 31 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists in a win over the Las Vegas Aces. The 25-year-old is coming off a season in which she averaged 17.4 points on 41.1 percent shooting from the field. She also garnered 6.3 assists and 7.1 rebounds per game in her third season in the league.
Considering the Liberty just added megastar Breanna Stewart to their roster, you have to imagine that they’ll be the odds-on favorites to win the WNBA title this season.
