After just three games in her rookie season, New York Liberty point guard Sabrina Ionescu sprained her ankle and was out for the rest of the 2020 season. After just three games in her second season, Ionescu did something that has only happened nine other times in the WNBA’s 25-year history.
In Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Lynx, Ionescu went off at Barclays Center. Ionescu ended her night with 26 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds. Among many notable achievements, Ionescu became the youngest person to record a triple-double and recorded the 10th triple-double in WNBA history.
Ionescu has been massive in the Liberty’s sudden turnaround. A perennial underachiever for the past three years that included a 2-20 2020 season, the Liberty are now 3-0. Much of this early success has been a result of Ionescu averaging 21 points per game, which is accompanied by a commanding 52.6 three point percentage, and a league high nine assists per game.
It remains too early too tell if Sabrina Ionescu can be a transformative player for the WNBA but if she can build on what she has already done in such a short period of time, she will have a long and prosperous pro career and may be a game changer for the Liberty.
