The WNBA has had a great start to the season, with new stars like Caitlin Clark, Cameron Brink, and Angel Reese drawing huge TV ratings and attendances for the league.
With the new interest in the league has come an influx of discussion on shows where the WNBA didn’t usually garner coverage, such as The Pat McAfee Show or First Take.
That coverage has left a lot to be desired at times. McAfee and Stephen A. Smith have faced recent criticism for their comments.
FS1’s Nick Wright joined Brandon Contes on the Awful Announcing Podcast and discussed what he thinks is the issue with some of the coverage.
“There’s an element of folks who are acting as if it is a privilege to have our coverage at all, and therefore our coverage cannot be criticized. I just think it’s all insane.”
Wright then went into how he covers the league for his shows.
“I think it’s simple. There’s a very obvious not that complicated sports story. You have this star-laden rookie class with one legitimate superstar. I think Angel’s excellent. I think Cameron Brink is excellent. They are compelling characters and compelling athletes. Caitlin is compelling on a different level and has performed individually on a different level at both the collegiate and professional levels.”
Wright’s philosophy appears to be to cover the league as he’d cover any other league, which should be the expectation.
