As the popularity of women’s sports continues to grow, ESPN is putting women’s sports front and center with a first-of-its-kind program.

This week, ESPN officially announced Women’s Sports Sundays, a weekly primetime programming that places women’s sports at the center of the summer sports calendar, highlighting top-tier WNBA and NWSL games over the summer.

The special programming will stretch across nine consecutive weeks, featuring 12 different live games as  ESPN delivers what it describes as “a premium viewing experience” that makes use of the entire ESPN ecosystem.

“Women’s sports are experiencing continued momentum, and Women’s Sports Sundays is ESPN’s next step in meeting that demand,” said Rosalyn Durant, ESPN’s executive vice president of programming and acquisitions, in a statement.

“This franchise is about more than showcasing games — it’s about building a consistent, high-profile destination that reflects the passion, excellence and cultural impact of women’s sports today, while giving athletes and leagues the stage they deserve.”

This is obviously a unique commitment to women’s sports that has not previously been seen at ESPN or any other sports network.

“Women’s sports are for everyone, and more accessible than ever,” ESPN wrote in its release.

We’ll have to see how the special programming is received by fans when it debuts over the summer.
