As the WNBA’s Chicago Sky team bus arrived at the team hotel in Washington, they were met by a man who harassed them.
Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times detailed the incident, noting that Chennedy Carter was specifically targeted.
“The Sky endured an alarming encounter upon their arrival to the U.S. capital when they were confronted by a man while getting off their bus at the team hotel,” Costabile reported. “The man — who is not a guest at the hotel — targeted guard Chennedy Carter specifically. When the team bus arrived, the man approached Carter and her teammates with a camera.
“The Sky travel with multiple bodyguards who accompany players everywhere they go as part of the team’s increased security measures taken this year,” Costabile added. “General manager Jeff Pagliocca told the Sun-Times that the situation was immediately de-escalated and that police weren’t called to the hotel.”
In a pair of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Sky forward Michaela Onyenwere praised the team’s security and also detailed some of the ugly heckling that the team was subjected to.
“We have security, and they did a great job of de-escalating the situation/protecting us,” she said. “It’s still extremely weird & crosses the boundaries meeting us right when we get off the bus.”
“Interesting how the video posted was edited and doesn’t include when he harassed our staff while calling us ‘ghetto b******’ and saying ‘women’s sports isn’t s***,’ her next post said. “We are not about to normalize things like that.”
