After missing last year’s WNBA season while spending 10 months in Russian captivity after authorities found a vape containing cannabis oil in her bag, Brittney Griner is back with the Phoenix Mercury preparing for the upcoming season, and it sounds like her teammates couldn’t be happier.
During a press conference this week, teammate Sophie Cunningham called Brittney Griner a “sister and friend,” saying she just hopes that the star player has “so much fun” in her return.
“It is so amazing. Like it’s night and day, for real,” Cunningham said last Friday. “I know everyone is excited to see her on the court, but just to have her around the facilities. To get dinner, hang out at her house, play games. Just to have your sister and friend back with you, it feels amazing.
“For me, I just want her to have so much fun and if she balls out, she balls out.”
Griner will be making her return to the court in a nationally-televised game against the Los Angeles Sparks later this year. It’s been a long and hard year for her, but she will undoubtedly be excited to get back on the court after everything she’s been through.
