Last year, WNBA superstar Brittney Griner was named an honorary All-Star in the midst of her detainment in Russia after she was arrested on drug charges when authorities found a small amount of prescription cannabis oil in her luggage. But now that she’s back and has returned to the court, Griner is now officially an All-Star once again – for real this time.
This week, Brittney Griner was named one of ten starters for the upcoming WNBA All-Star game. This will be Griner’s ninth time serving as an All-Star, which includes last year when she was named an honorary All-Star by WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert.
Breanna Stewart, who will be a captain for this year’s All-Star game, is excited to play alongside Griner once again.
“I think all of us are really inspired in what she’s doing and the way she’s kind of handling herself,” Stewart said of Griner according to Fox News. “So it’s another moment to just continue to celebrate her and watch her do her thing on the court.”
Griner has been dominant this season, averaging 19.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game during her return season with the Phoenix Mercury.
During last year’s All-Star game, the WNBA honored Griner in a unique way when both teams wore No. 42 jerseys for the game’s second half as a tribute to Griner, who was still falsely imprisoned in Russia.
