It doesn’t sound like Becky Hammon is unhappy in the WNBA. The former six-time WNBA All-Star recently sounded off on her thoughts about her status right now.
Hammon is currently the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces. In 2022, the Aces won the WNBA Championship, and Hammon earned three accolades: A championship, the Commissioner’s Cup, and the WNBA Coach of the Year Award. But before she got there, Hammon coached on the San Antonio Spurs staff with Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich. Previous open NBA jobs have linked Hammon to them and she has fielded several interviews. But no NBA team ever came calling, and she eventually landed in Las Vegas.
Suffice it to say; Hammon is doing just alright right now in the W. And by the judge of an interview TIME Magazine held with her, she feels she doesn’t need the approval of the NBA.
“I love being here,” Hammon told TIME about her status in the WNBA and whether she’d embrace “becoming the first woman to coach a group of men in a major sports setting.” She also said, “I love being back on the women’s side. I don’t need the stamp of approval from the NBA.”
Hammon continued about it, expressing her desire not to go peddling for a job in the men’s game.
“You’re going to have to come after me. I’m not going to beg for a job anymore,” Hammon said.
Becky Hammon has already achieved significant success in the W. She and the Acdes will look to reign again as WNBA Champions in 2023. From the sounds of it, don’t expect her to be leaving Vegas for the Association anytime soon.
