Women’s tennis legend Serena Williams played what many expected to be her final tennis match earlier this month when she lost to Ajla Tomljanović in the third round of the US Open after announcing her retirement plans. But based on her recent comments, it sounds like there’s a chance the all-time great hasn’t played her last tennis match, after all.
In an interview with Good Morning America on Wednesday morning, Williams revealed that she might consider coming out of retirement, mentioning Tom Brady’s retirement and subsequent unretirement a few months later.
“I mean you never know. I’ve just been saying that I think Tom Brady started a really cool trend, you know,” Williams said on Good Morning America. “And the way he did it…”
Williams did not reveal specific plans to continue playing, but she did say that she would like to stay around the game, even if she does remain retired from competitive tennis.
“I feel like tennis has given me so much, and I feel like there’s no way I don’t want to be involved in tennis in some way in the future,” Williams said. “I don’t know what that involvement is yet, but I do know that I love the sport so much. I love the game. I love everything about it. It’s just been such a light in my life that I definitely want to keep something involved in that.”
Still, she didn’t rule out a return. And the tennis world would certainly love to see it.
