Earlier in the week, a prisoner stabbed disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar in prison. Days later, the reason for that stabbing has now come to light. Nassar, who is serving life in prison for criminal sexual conduct and federal child pornography charges, was stabbed over gross comments he made while he and other prison inmates were watching the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
The AP provided the insidious details in an article published Wednesday. According to the publication, the suspect, named Shane McMillan, “told prison workers that he attacked Nassar after the sexually abusive ex-U.S. gymnastics team doctor made a comment on wanting to see girls playing in the Wimbledon women’s match, the person said.”
Nassar was the face of a pervasive abuse scandal in U.S. Gymnastics for dozens of years. Things finally changed in 2015 after years of unraveling, with multiple notable gymnasts, including Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney, coming forward with sexual abuse allegations. He also became the center of an abuse scandal at Michigan State University. In the state of Michigan, Nassar faced 10 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and was convicted on those charges, as well.
According to the AP, the suspect attempted to stab an inmate to death in 2011 and was convicted of assaulting a correctional officer in 2006. The AP wrote that after he stabbed Larry Nassar, doctors at a nearby hospital kept him in stable condition, and he was diagnosed with a collapsed lung.
