The United States Women’s National Team is looking to correct past mistakes against Sweden in their upcoming World Cup match on Sunday.
Sweden handed the United States its earliest-ever exit in a global tournament at the 2016 Olympics. Five years later, at the 2021 Olympics, Sweden trounced America, 3-0.
USWNT co-captain Alex Morgan said that those games, however, will have no impact on Sunday’s contest.
“What’s happened against Sweden in the past is in the past,” Morgan said, according to Caitlin Murray of ESPN. “We obviously take away a lot of things in terms of their playing style and how to break them down, but I don’t think that there’s any feelings towards the games we played against them in the past that we’re bringing into tomorrow.
Still, Morgan admitted that the World Cup hasn’t gone according to her team’s plans thus far. But she also acknowledged all their goals are in front of them.
“It hasn’t been the tournament that I would’ve hoped for,” Morgan said. “But at the same time, having this incredible opportunity in front of us in the round of 16, facing Sweden, a team we know extremely well, there’s no question we’re highly motivated to play in this game.”
Sweden vs. America kicks off Sunday morning at 5 a.m.
