For the first time since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Alex Morgan will not be on the roster when the US Women’s National Soccer Team attempts to capture gold next month in the Paris Olympics.
Head coach Emma Hayes finalized the 18-player roster Wednesday morning and did not select the 35-year-old forward.
“Making an Olympic roster is a huge privilege and an honor and there is no denying that it was an extremely competitive process among the players and that there were difficult choices, especially considering how hard everyone has worked over the past 10 months,” Hayes said in a statement, via ESPN.
Morgan acknowledged the news on her X account on Tuesday, as well.
“Today, I’m disappointed about not having the opportunity to represent our country on the Olympic stage. This will always be a tournament that is close to my heart and I take immense pride any time I put on the crest. In less than a month, I look forward to supporting this team and cheering them on alongside the rest of our country. LFG,” the USWNT’s active goals leader said.
The USWNT has struggled in international competitions lately, finishing with a bronze medal in the 2020 Summer Olympics and exiting the 2023 Women’s World Cup in the Round of 16. Their last Olympic gold medal came in 2012 in London.
