“Max Power, he’s the man whose name you’d love to touch. But you mustn’t touch.”
Max Power may be coming to the English Premier League next season. No, not Homer Simpson but an actual soccer player from England actually named “Max Power” is attracting interest from Crystal Palace in a report from the Daily Mail.
Soccer’s Max Power has been playing professional soccer in England since 2011 but has never played in the top league. After four seasons with now non league Tranmere Rovers, Power played for Wigan this past season. At Wigan, the midfielder scored six goals and helped Wigan win the League One title and automatic promotion to the English Championship, England’s second highest soccer division.
In regards to his name, Power seems to take it all in stride even though that wasn’t always the case. Talking to the Daily Mail about his memorable name, Power said:
“The worst was thinking that I’d been named after Homer’s alter ego character in The Simpsons,” he says, “but when I looked it up I was relieved to see that episode didn’t come out until I was six.”
“I got asked to do a piece for the Max Power car magazine once, although I did keep my clothes on for the pictures,” he jokes. “..and I get a double-take from lads when I introduce myself from time to time but I’ve got used to it. I’ve even called my baby son Max Jr.”
As soccer’s Max Power states, he was not named after an episode of “The Simpsons.” In the 1999 episode, Homer changed his name to Max Power after he was made fun of by the town when someone on TV was named Homer Simpson and acted like an idiot. Homer said he got the name from a washing machine.
Because of his new dynamic name, Homer/Max gained more respect around the community as well as giving us this memorable parody of the theme song to “Goldfinger.”
It remains to be seen if Max Power graces our TV screens, playing in the top league of English soccer. Let’s hope he does things the right way and not the “Max Power way.”
