Former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech retired at the end of last season but he’s still finding ways to fuel his competitive juices. The 37-year-old went back to Chelsea to become a performance advisor but he hasn’t yet retired from being an athlete.
Instead of boots and a soccer pitch, Cech is playing on skates and in a hockey rink as he made his ice hockey debut in England. Playing for fourth division Guildford Phoenix, Cech won Man of the Match honors as he saved two penalties in a 2-2 shootout win on his debut.
Wearing #39 to honor his Czech mate Dominik Hasek, Cech might’ve been playing in a lower league but considering he’s 37 and likely hadn’t played hockey since he was a kid, doing well in fourth division ice hockey is quite an achievement.
Cech’s hockey adventure has our minds wondering who else could go from one sport to the other. Who wouldn’t want to see Tom Brady, when he retires from the Patriots 20 years from now, play indoor soccer in front of a couple thousand people?
