The National Women’s Soccer League fined one of its member clubs over the improper use of a charter plane. On Tuesday, news emerged from The Athletic that the NWSL reprimanded the Kansas City Current for violating league policies over using charter planes.
The Athletic reported that the NWSL fined the Current to the tune of “over $55,000.” They said they were reprimanded over a flight from Kansas City to Louisville on July 6, 2023, before KC’s game against Racing Louisville on the ensuing day.
The Current faced difficult circumstances if they didn’t go on this charter flight. According to The Athletic, there were few commercial options on the board for Kansas City to go to Louisville per information obtained in a letter that was sent to players. They would have required an extra night in a hotel, per The Athletic, and they had also played in two consecutive road games prior to the game in Louisville. So, that game would have been their third road contest in a row.
The NWSL has a charter flight policy that’s currently not public, according to The Athletic. Teams only know about it via email, said The Athletic. They said that they could not qualify for a charter flight because of the number of days between the games. Which in the Current’s case weren’t short.
