It’s usually the incredible soccer goals that go viral and create a buzz on the Internet and social media. But during Monday night’s MLS match between New York City FC and Inter Miami, it was a shocking missed goal that went viral.
During the match, New York City FC was on the attack when a through ball found Héber Araújo dos Santos in the box. The winger took a shot at the goal and the ball appeared to be headed for the goal.
At the last second, Inter Miami defender Aimé Mabika nearly redirected the ball into the back of the net for an own goal, but the ball went off the crossbar and landed at the feet of fellow Miami defender Christopher McVey. When the ball landed at his feet, McVey tried to clear it out of bounds but instead also nearly put it in the back of the net, sending it back off the crossbar.
Eventually, the ball landed safely outside of the box. But the whole play looked like something straight out of a FIFA video game.
The play was absolutely wild with a ton of twists, and the soccer world had plenty to say about it on Twitter, with many wondering how exactly the ball managed to stay out of the back of the net.
Ultimately, New York City didn’t exactly need this goal as they beat Inter Miami by a lopsided score of 3-0. But they’ll undoubtedly still be wondering how exactly they missed out on this one.
