There have been a whole lot of sports events rescheduled lately thanks to positive COVID-19 tests, and two of the most recent come in Major League Soccer. Saturday night, MLS announced that they had postponed both the Orlando City-Columbus Crew and FC Dallas-Minnesota United matches:
The Orlando City vs. Columbus Crew match was postponed following two confirmed cases of COVID-19 among the Columbus Crew staff. Orlando City confirmed a positive test result among its first team roster earlier on Saturday.
MLS also postponed the FC Dallas vs. Minnesota United match following two confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 among the Minnesota United player pool.
The league said that both matches were postponed to ensure the health and safety of all players and staff and to allow for further testing and evaluation prior to travel and competition.
This came after the league had already seen a couple of postponed matches this week, with the Colorado Rapids already having games against LAFC (Wednesday) and the LA Galaxy (Saturday) postponed. And this perhaps speaks to some of the wider issues MLS has had since exiting their “MLS is Back” bubble in Orlando. (Of course, that bubble saw positive tests too, but only at the start.) And while many of those issues have been with one team, the Rapids, these latest stories show that there are challenges beyond that team. We’ll see what this means for MLS going forward.
