United States Women’s National Team midfielder Megan Rapinoe created headlines throughout the world when she laughed after skying a penalty kick in a World Cup loss to Sweden.
The 38-year-old winger announced her retirement after the heartbreaking 5-4 shootout defeat to Sweden, a team that has had America’s number in recent years.
According to the Daily Mail, “new footage has emerged” of Rapinoe laughing alongside her family just minutes after “she sparked outrage for her reaction to missing a penalty in the USA’s heartbreaking Women’s World Cup exit.”
The video clip shows Rapinoe standing at the side of the pitch “minutes later with her family, in which she looks initially upset,” according to Ben Nagle of The Daily Mail. “And then she bursts into laughter again.”
Her parents, mother Denise and father Jim, are among the family and friends who embrace her at the stadium. They all share a group hug before Rapinoe can “be seen laughing with the group.”
‘That’s like a sick, sick joke. I’ve never hit it over, when I miss they are saved. That’s why I had that smile on my face,” Rapinoe explained to the media about her decisive miss.
“I’m like, “You’ve got to be [expletive] kidding me. I’m going to miss a penalty?” I mean, honestly, I can’t remember the last time I missed.”
