The United States Women’s National Team closes out their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage against Portugal early Tuesday morning. The Women’s team entered the tournament as favorites, as they looked to become the first team to ever win three consecutive World Cup titles. However, after a draw against the Netherlands, they now find themselves in pretty uncharted territory.

One of those players in unfamiliar territory is Megan Rapinoe, who was an unused substitute, in the team’s 1-1 draw. Rapinoe, who announced that she would retire at season’s end, has nine goals in 17 FIFA Women’s World Cup appearances.

She touched on the mood of the team ahead of their final group-stage match against Portugal.

“I think, of course, there’s a little bit of anxiousness anytime there’s a result that needs to be had, that has a little bit of feeling to it,” she said over the weekend. “I think that’s exciting. I think everybody knows that too. Everybody’s like ‘OK, we gave to perform better and we have to get this result.’ I mean, I think that that is something that just always gets passed down to the generations of this time is like, we got into these moments like [heck] yeah.”

We’ll have to see if the team, including Rapinoe, is up to the task when they take on Portugal Tuesday
