Playing in her final World Cup of her United States Women’s National Team career, superstar Megan Rapinoe had a chance to help send the USWNT to the next round with a crucial penalty shot. But unfortunately for her and the USWNT, she missed the shot and the United States ultimately lost the penalty shootout.
Megan Rapinoe had a chance to give the United States a 4-2 lead in the penalty shootout – which likely would have led to a victory since Sweden missed its next kick – but she missed, sending the ball soaring over the post.
Sweden ultimately came from behind in the shootout to win and knock the United States out of the tournament. And it could have been avoided if Rapinoe had found the back of the net.
“I mean this is like a sick joke, for me personally,” Rapinoe said after the match. “This is just dark comedy – I missed a penalty.”
It was a brutal miss from the United States star that ended her World Cup career on a sour note, and it led to plenty of reactions on social media as a result.
Smiling and laughing after missing the kick that would’ve won your team the match? Yeah, that’s a bad look https://t.co/Dx5dTb3lX1

Rapinoe had a long and storied USWNT career. It’s safe to say this is not the end she wanted.
