Manchester City is in trouble with the English Premier League due to its monetary expenditures.
The New York Times, adding to previous reports from The Athletic, reported on Monday that the Premier League charged City, its reigning champion, with “engaging in years of financial rules violations in its pursuit of trophies.”
The outlet notes that the accusations “could result in the most severe punishments in league history — including the prospect that City, one of the most dominant soccer teams in Europe over the past decade, could be ejected from England’s top division.
Manchester City is accused over more than 100 violations, including “failing to provide accurate financial information ‘that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position,'” among other accusations.
The sports world was quick to react to the news:
Men in Blazers made a joke about Manchester City actually being Sam Bankman-Fried, the once-alleged “crypto king” who is currently on the fast-track to federal prison.
“In an alternative universe… If Manchester City were stripped of their Premier League winning seasons,” wrote Football Daily.

Only time will tell how Manchester City performs after seemingly being caught red-handed cheating to accomplish its success.
City is scheduled to face Aston Villa on Sunday.
