Hope Solo is one of the most storied goalies in U.S. women’s soccer history. Unfortunately, she usually only seems to make headlines when something wrong has happened with her. The World Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist was back in the news late last week when it was reported that she had been found passed out in her car in North Carolina with her two-year-old twins inside. Solo was charged with DWI, resisting a public officer, and misdemeanor child abuse.
On Saturday, the 40-year-old released a statement on her social media accounts relating to the arrest.

“For those who have reached out showing love and support, thank you,” Solo began. “Our family is strong and surrounded with love. Our kids are strong, intelligent, happy, and vibrant, and we are present everyday giving them the best life possible. We will be able to share the facts in due time. In the meantime, our kids are enjoying the [North Carolina] sun, eating popsicles, and playing on our property. Life can be tough, but these are the moments that truly matter.”
For Solo, who will be inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in May, this is the latest in a series of arrests and legal issues that have plagued her image and career. While still playing for USWNT in 2015, she was suspended when she and her husband Jerramy Stevens were pulled over and Stevens was charged with DUI. A year earlier, Solo had been arrested following an altercation with family members though charges were eventually dropped.
There have also been various incidents that haven’t shown her in the best light, including a profane rant caught on camera in 2016. She was also infamously suspended after referring to Sweden as “a bunch of cowards” following USWNT’s loss to them.
