United States Men’s National Team coach Gregg Berhalter had little to say about the status of starting midfielder Weston McKennie and right back Sergiño Dest ahead of the Americans’ much-anticipated game against England in Group B on Friday.
McKennie and Dest were recovering from thigh injuries entering the World Cup but started in the USMNT’s 1-1 draw against Wales on Monday. Both McKennie and Dest exited early after appearing to either reaggravate their injuries or suffering cramps.
Berhalter didn’t specify whether or not McKennie or Dest would play against England, but he suggested they would be available.
McKennie and Dest played 66 and 74 minutes, respectively, against Wales. It’s not surprising that Berhalter stayed relatively quiet about the health of two integral players or how he’s thinking about the personnel he’ll use.
Berhalter was also asked about U.S. forward Giovanni Reyna’s availability against England. Reyna, one of the best attacking players on the roster when healthy, was left on the bench against Wales as Berhalter inserted Jordan Morris in the 88th minute with the game tied.
After the game, Berhalter said Reyna felt tightness ahead of the Wales game, while Reyna said he felt “100%.” In regards to Friday’s game, Reyna should be available for selection.
Kickoff between the USMNT and England is slated for 2 p.m. Friday on Fox.
