Eccentric billionaire Elon Musk got the sports world talking this week when he randomly suggested that he was planning to buy the Manchester United soccer club in London. But it appears the Tesla CEO won’t actually be following through with the purchase.
On Tuesday Musk Tweeted his plans to purchase the historic English Premier League club, saying simply “I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.” But a few hours later, Musk revealed that he was not serious about purchasing the team and that it was a “long-running joke” on Twitter.
However, if he did ever purchase a sports team, Musk said it would be Manchester United because the billionaire was a Man U fan as a kid.
“No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams,” Musk said on Twitter. “Although, if it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav team as a kid.”
While Musk isn’t actually planning to purchase Manchester United, there’s no question that he could afford to do it if he wanted to. The CEO of both SpaceX and Tesla, Musk is currently considered the richest man in the world with an estimated net worth of $270.1 billion, according to Forbes.
