A legal group is suing NASCAR and one of its race teams for alleged discrimination against white males.
On3.com reports that America First Legal is suing NASCAR and Rev Racing. The group wants the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to investigate the race team for “illegal discrimination against White, male Americans.”
America First Legal is led by Stephen Miller, a former senior advisor to former President Donald Trump. According to On3.com, the group has also filed a “long string” of similar suits against MLB, investment firm Morgan Stanley, Starbucks and other organizations.
Rev Racing works closely with NASCAR’s long-running Drive For Diversity initiative to promote opportunities for minorities and women in the sport. NASCAR competitors are overwhelmingly white and male. Owned by former Dale Earnhardt Inc. executive Max Siegel, Rev Racing has had some success in promoting diversity, fielding cars in NASCAR’s regional and Craftsman Truck Series for minority drivers.
Former Drive for Diversity drivers include 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson; Bubba Wallace, the NASCAR Cup Series’ first full-time black driver in a half-century; and Daniel Suárez.
The lawsuit specifically mentions the “diversity driver development program,” along with NASCAR’s “diversity pit crew development program,” and “NASCAR diversity internship program.”
The suit alleges these initiatives violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibiting discrimination based on race and sex.
Fans reacted to the lawsuit with skepticism.
