On Wednesday, Fox Sports announced that crew chief Larry McReynolds will return to the broadcast booth for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover. Consider Dale Earnhardt Jr. a big fan of the decision.
Earnhardt tweeted his appreciation of the move after it was announced, saying that it was exactly what was needed.
“Exactly what I had long hoped for,” Earnhardt tweeted. “Every booth needs a crew chief who’s on top of the strategy. NBC has Steve Letarte and Fox has Larry McReynolds.”
It’s a sentiment that was echoed by many other NASCAR fans who are thrilled to see McReynolds back in the booth.
McReynolds is a two-time Daytona 500 champion crew chief and served as a Cup Series crew chief from 1985 to 2000, amassing 23 Cup wins, 21 poles, 122 top-five, and 209 top-ten finishes. He’s also spent time as an analyst on various NASCAR TV shows and radio programs.
He also still works in the pit, having crewed Jeffrey Earnhardt’s runner-up finish last weekend in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.
Many NASCAR fans have said that McReynolds should be a permanent fixture in the booth for Fox given his wealth of experience and what he brings to the broadcast. We’ll see if Fox takes that seriously moving forward.
