Over the past few years, the debate regarding transgender women and girls in female sports has become one of the hottest topics in politics. But unfortunately, one Republican lawmaker has been spreading some blatant misinformation to try to make his point.
Tommy Tuberville, a Republican Senator from Alabama, has been trying to propose federal legislation banning transgender women and girls from competing as women in sports. But during a recent interview with Fox News, Tuberville made a blatantly false claim about just how many transgender girls there were competing in high school sports across the country.
“We’re getting to a point now where women and girls sports are getting ready to be extinct. Because already in states across this country, we have high school teams that are made up of totally boys participating against girls,” Tuberville claimed in the interview via Aaron Rupar.
Of course, this is completely untrue. There are absolutely zero high school teams throughout the country made up completely – or even mostly – of transgender girls. In fact, in 2023, there were only five transgender athletes competing in girls sports at the high school level across the entire country.
Clearly, this is outright misinformation from Tuberville, and it did not take long at all for people to call him out on social media.
“This is just completely untrue. A total fabrication by Coach Tubs,” USA Today’s Dan Wolken said in a post on X..
“Not a good sign when all you have left is completely making things up,” the HRC’s Brandon Wolf said.
“Repulsive moron just makes things up and lies,” journalist John Harwood said.
Of course, this is not the first time that Tuberville has spread a blatant lie. Last month, Tuberville – the former head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders – falsely claimed that he recruited current Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes to Texas Tech. Mahomes quickly refuted that claim as he made it clear that he had no relationship at all with Tuberville and can’t recall even meeting him.
