The United States fought extremely hard to bring WNBA star Brittney Griner home after she was sentenced to nine years in prison. But fellow American Sarah Krivanek, who was also imprisoned in Russia, claims that the United States and Joe Biden did not fight nearly as hard to secure her release. While Krivanek admits that she’s angry with the U.S. government, she holds no ill will toward Brittney Griner.
In an interview with ABC News, Sarah Krivanek said that she is happy Brittney Griner was released and she revealed that she even wrote to her when they were both imprisoned in Russia.
“I’m really glad that she got out,” Krivanek said in the interview. “I wrote her a letter from the deportation detention facility I was in saying ‘don’t worry, nobody is going to leave you behind. Everyone is supporting you. Prison life is going to be very cruel, you’re going to need to learn your opponent so you can survive. I was genuinely – as a human being – worried ‘what is she going to do for nine years?’ I just felt sorry for her, because I thought she was going to make a lot of mistakes and infractions that cost me. But then she got swapped I literally genuinely had joy that she didn’t have to endure that.”
Krivanek was actually released on the same day as Brittney Griner. However, unlike Griner, she had to serve her entire one-year prison sentence as the United States did not intervene to secure her release, and she had some harsh words for Joe Biden about it.
