Herschel Walker, the Republican candidate for Senate in Georgia, faces Democratic incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock in one of the nation’s most brutal campaigns.
The two sides in the race spent more than $241 million combined on the pivotal election. Former presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump campaigned for their party’s respective candidates. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James even made an appearance on the trail, endorsing Senator Warnock.
The final polling gave Walker a two-point lead heading into election day. Warnock, however, defeated Walker in the total tally by roughly 35,000 votes, but neither candidate earned the required 50 percent of the vote.
That means Walker and Warnock will face each other in a special runoff election. Even though the Democrats are close to retaining control of the Senate regardless of the race’s result, tens of millions of dollars—if not hundreds—will be poured into the new election cycle.
Walker’s campaign announced a major fundraising haul on the first day of new activity, raising $3.3 million in the new race’s first 24 hours.
Walker still faces an uphill battle, according to one anonymous source. “A lot of Republicans held their noses and voted for Herschel, thinking Senate control was on the line. If that is no longer the case in a month, he’s gonna have a problem,” the source told Fox News.
The special runoff election between Walker and Warnock is scheduled for Dec. 6th.
