Brittney Griner is home for Christmas thanks to President Joe Biden trading a convicted arms dealer for the WNBA superstar in a prisoner exchange with the Russian government.
Biden faced virulent online criticism for leaving former United States Marine Paul Whelan, who is currently serving 16 years in Russian custody in espionage charges, out of the deal that freed Griner. Whalen’s family issued multiple statements supporting Biden’s move.
You can add UFC legend B.J. Penn to the list of celebrity critics of the deal that includes former president Donald Trump.
Penn took to Instagram over the weekend and issued an absolutely brutal statement on the deal that freed Griner.
“How much money did Russia pay Brittney Griner to bring a weed pen to Russia and wait to get traded so they could get the ‘Lord of War’ back in Russia to arm militants to fight Ukraine?” Penn wrote without any supporting evidence to his shocking claim.
The Russian government originally sentenced Griner to nine years of hard labor in a maximum-security penal colony for women after she plead guilty to charges she brought a small amount of medical hashish oil aboard a flight with her Russian Premier League team.
Griner is currently relaxing with her wife on a military base outside San Antonio, Texas, ahead of the holiday.
