You have to hand it to Sha’Carri Richardson. The track star certainly knows how to add some flourish to her victories.
The 2023 World Athletics Championships are underway in Budapest, Hungary, and the American track and field athlete got a good start to the day with a victory in her 100m heat.
In fact, she was so sure of her victory that before crossing the finish line she wiped her hand across her face and gestured to the crowd.
Sure enough, she held on for a win in the heat. Her 10.92 was the fastest time at Sunday’s competition with St. Lucia’s Julien Alfred and Poland’s Ewa Swoboda following close behind at 10.99 and 10.98, respectively.
Richardson and the other qualifiers now move on to Monday’s semifinals and finals. The 23-year-old track star is hoping to out-run Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, a five-time World Champion.
Richardson has been at the center of some controversy in recent years. She had to miss the Olympics two years ago after failing a drug test. She’s also been pretty outspoken about her love of the sport and how it’s broadcast not to mention the way that reporters cover her and other track athletes. It now seems like she’s back to dominating on the track and that’s a scary sign for her competitors.
Richardson’s early celebration on Sunday certainly garnered some big reactions from the sports world.
