Former swimming star Helen Smart, who represented Great Britain in the 2000 Summer Olympics, has died at age 43, her family confirmed.
No cause of the death was given, but the family noted her passing as “sudden.”
Smart, competing under her maiden name Helen Don-Duncan, swam two events for Great Britain in the Sydney games, the 50-meter backstroke and 200-meter backstroke.
After her retirement from swimming, Smart entered the education field, and was most recently principal at Worsley Mesnes Community Primary School in Wigan, England. The school’s Facebook page paid tribute to the popular educator. Smart’s husband, Craig, posted an inspirational message on the page.
Wednesday he posted a Twitter response to a Swimming.org story on his wife.
“Had so many messages and comments from Helen’s swimming friends! … I am sad for my children but I will make her proud.”
Smart’s father, John Don-Duncan also paid tribute to her on Facebook, saying “Helen was our pride and joy… we are so proud of her… she lit up a room as soon as she arrived.. Linda and I can’t comprehend how she could just simply go to sleep and not wake up?!”
Members of the sports world shared their sympathies with the family. Former Great Britain Olympic swimmer Marc Spackman noted, “RIP Helen. Thoughts with your family.”
