Since Donald Trump was elected president of the United States, tensions have been high between the United States and Canada, particularly as a result of the tariffs Trump imposed on Canada and his continued insistence on adding Canada to the U.S. as the 51st state. And it seems that the rivalry has extended to sports, as well.
On Thursday night, the United States took on Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off Final. Before the game, Donald Trump took to social media to send a brutal message to Canada while supporting Team USA.
“I’ll be calling our GREAT American Hockey Team this morning to spur them on towards victory tonight against Canada, which with FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Trump expressed his regret that he could not attend the game in person, but he made it pretty clear that he would be watching.
Of course, he couldn’t help himself as he took a little shot at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who he playfully called “Governor Trudeau.”
“I will be speaking before the Governors tonight in D.C., and will sadly, therefore, be unable to attend. But we will all be watching, and if Governor Trudeau would like to join us, he would be most welcome. Good luck to everybody, and have a GREAT game tonight. So exciting!” Trump wrote in his post.
The United States defeated Canada in the first meeting between the teams earlier this week to clinch a spot in the final.
During the 4 Nations Face-Off games that were played in Montreal, Canada, the United States national anthem was loudly booed by the Canadian fans in attendance.
