The Minnesota Vikings made the tough decision to let veteran quarterback Sam Darnold walk in free agency after a career season in Minnesota, effectively handing the franchise over to young quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
Unfortunately for McCarthy and the Vikings, Darnold earned the number one overall seed in the NFC with his new team, the Seattle Seahawks, and the Vikings missed the playoffs entirely.
McCarthy struggled not only to stay healthy but also to produce at a consistent clip when he was available. Now, head coach Kevin O’Connell is citing his desire to move on from McCarthy as the de facto starter heading into this season, stating his belief that there needs to be a competition at the position heading into the 2026 season.
“I think there has to be,” O’Connell said, according to the Vikings’ official website. “That’s what’s going to make everybody better in that room. It’s going to be what makes our entire offense thrive through that competition. That should be how our entire organization looks at their individual roles when we compete against each other in the different aspects of the offseason.”
“I ultimately think that’s what will [prepare] not only the starter but the next guy and the next guy, and we’ve learned we’ve got to get a lot of guys ready to play. And we’ve got to do it with a responsibility of being the best version of our offense.”
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“If he is not yet done as it appeared just a week ago, what do you think of the possibility of O’Connell bringing in Aaron Rodgers, particularly since that seemed like the Vikings were a potential destination for him just last off-season?” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“1 year too late. That should of been obvious,” someone else added.
“Bring in Aaron like you should have done last year,” one fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see who the Vikings bring into the room to compete with McCarthy.
