The Minnesota Vikings are now in the J.J. McCarthy era after Sam Darnold signed with the Seattle Seahawks this past offseason on the heels of following his resurgent season in Minnesota. McCarthy has shown flashes of the potential that got him selected in the first round in 2024. However, the young quarterback has yet to put everything together for a full game.

Unfortunately, McCarthy’s development has been stunted by a high ankle sprain that kept him out of Minnesota’s Week Three win over the Cincinnati Bengals. It looks like McCarthy is going to be out again this weekend, according to one prominent league insider.

Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy and LB Andrew Van Ginkel are officially out for Sunday vs. Pittsburgh, Kevin O’Connell said. C Ryan Kelly and DL Javon Hargrave are good to go,” reported NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Friday.

Fans reacted to the news on social media.

“Is JJ hurt or does he just suck and serving a benching timeout?” one fan wondered on Twitter.

“Definitely a mixed bag for the Vikings—McCarthy and Van Ginkel out is tough, but Kelly and Hargrave returning could tip the scales against Pittsburgh. Should be an intriguing matchup,” someone else added.

“McCarthy is quickly becoming a bust due to not staying healthy,” one fan added.

It’ll be interesting to see how Carson Wentz does in place of McCarthy on Sunday.
