The Minnesota Vikings are finally in the J.J. McCarthy era after the young quarterback lost all of his rookie season to a knee injury he suffered in the 2024 preseason. Last week, McCarthy received NFC offensive player of the week honors after leading the Vikings to a ferocious comeback in his regular-season debut.

Unfortunately, McCarthy had a welcome to the league moment in Week Two, with the Vikings offense only mustering a total of six points in a loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night. Now, the news is even worse for McCarthy, according to one prominent insider.

“NEW: Vikings are not anticipating having J.J. McCarthy this week because of an ankle sprain, per Kevin O’Connell. Not expected to be long term. Carson Wentz is the likely starter,” reported ESPN’s Kevin Seifert on Monday.

Fans reacted to the news on social media.

“Good news it’s not long-term, but tough break for the rookie. Hope he bounces back quick,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Better to sit him now and get him fully healthy than risk aggravating it,” someone else added.

“How do they know six days out, and an ankle sprain is going to keep him out? Either it’s worse than they are saying, or he isn’t ready, and it’s an excuse,” one fan added.

It’ll be interesting to see when McCarthy can return to the field.
