Thursday delivered massive news for the Miami Dolphins. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Vic Fangio has officially agreed to join the Dolphins as their defensive coordinator.
“After speaking with multiple teams about their defensive coordinator position, Vic Fangio has decided to join the Dolphins as their defensive coordinator and officially will accept the position on the Miami staff after the Super Bowl,” Schefter wrote in a Tweet on Thursday morning.
While Schefter delivered the good news on Thursday, there were some doubts that it would happen.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported over the weekend that the Dolphins struck a deal with Fangio, but that report was later refuted by Fangio, who told veteran NFL reporter Michael Silver that he had not decided on anything just yet.
“For what it’s worth, Vic Fangio told me late last night, ‘Nothing has been decided on my end,’ Silver had tweeted. “There is a huge amount of mutual respect between Kyle Shanahan and Fangio, a highly successful Niners DC under Jim Harbaugh. And it appears the 49ers will have an opening soon.”
The 49ers’ defensive coordinator position did open up, as earlier this week, DeMeco Ryans agreed to become the next head coach of the Houston Texans.
Even though Fangio is still ending up in Miami, it appears that the former Denver Broncos head coach was extremely deliberate in his process. Now, he’ll join head coach Mike McDaniel in South Beach.
