We still don’t know much about Tom Brady’s mysterious leave of absence from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in August aside from theories that he was actually a contestant on a popular television show or away getting plastic surgery. But regardless of the reason, head coach Todd Bowles thinks Brady’s time away actually benefitted the team.

During an appearance with former NFL head coach Tony Dungy on Sunday’s edition of Football Night in America, Bowles revealed a surprising way that Brady’s absence actually helped the Bucs develop their offense during the preseason.

“I thought it was a good thing,” Bowles told Dungy, according to JoeBucsFan.com. “And it kind of helped us develop our run game a little more. You know, it’s like, ‘OK, we’ve got to play with Blaine [Gabbert] or Kyle [Trask], let’s develop things we have to do to win the ballgame.’ And I think in that process we got our run game going a little more because we spent a little more time on it, which we probably wouldn’t have had he been here. So I think it’s helped us on the long run. And we figured out that we’re a team and not just one guy and a team.”

So if the Buccaneers suddenly have a much stronger running game this season, Tampa Bay can thank Brady’s leave of absence – wherever he went.
