The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new head coach in Mike McCarthy, but the franchise is still without a long-term answer at quarterback, the same problem that plagued the team during the backend of Mike Tomlin’s tenure.
Last season’s quarterback, four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers, is a free agent, and although McCarthy has already said that he’d welcome Rodgers back with open arms next season, the reality is that Rodgers could still opt to retire, and if he doesn’t he may sign with a team in need of a veteran presence at the position, such as the Minnesota Vikings.
However, one legendary Steelers quarterback, now a prominent member of sports media, is saying that he’s already had Rodgers’ decision on retirement and playing future confirmed to him as a part of the Steelers’ inner circle, and that Rodgers has ultimately decided to give it another go.
“I have heard, right [before] the McCarthy thing was announced, I had already heard that Aaron Rodgers had told Mike, If yo want me to come back for a year, I’II come back and join you,” Terry Bradshaw said in an appearance on 103.7 The Buzz, per Steelers Depot.
McCarthy has revealed that he has already spoken with Rodgers, so it would make sense that there are handshake agreements in place, and even before he was hired as the head coach, Rodgers spoke about how highly he regarded him, from their time together with the Green Bay Packers.
“I told Mike, I wish I had him for 15 years of my career,” Rodgers said. “And that’s no shot to anybody ahead of him. Mike McCarthy and I were real close, still are. I love Mike, but I wish I could have played 30 (years) and had 15. I had 13 with Mike McCarthy. Would’ve been cool to have 13 with Mike Tomlin.”
It’ll be interesting to see when Bradshaw’s revelation is made official.
