The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been a hot topic as of late for a number of reasons this offseason.
The team was seemingly in flux when Tom Brady announced his retirement back in February, but quickly un-retired just a month later.
The team underwent a coaching change after the shocking announcement of Bruce Arians’ retirement from coaching, who will be going into a front-office role for the team with defensive coordinator Todd Bowles taking his place as head coach.
With the return of Brady, their quarterback situation seems to be secure for the time being. It got more secure on Thursday, when the team announced that they are re-signing veteran quarterback Ryan Griffin.
Griffin has been in the NFL for nine seasons and on the Buccaneers since 2015 but has only appeared in two NFL games throughout his long career.
It remains to be seen whether or not he can really be a serviceable backup in the NFL, mostly because he hasn’t seen the opportunity to play.
Griffin will seemingly be in a quarterback battle in training camp with former second-round pick Kyle Trask to be Brady’s primary backup in 2022.
There is no debating the greatness of Brady. But he will be going into his 23rd NFL season in 2022. It is crucial that the Buccaneers have a capable backup quarterback should Brady happen to get injured.
Brady has been as durable as it gets in the league over his long-tenured career. But his durability will only become more of a question as he gets older, and Griffin will be a part of the Buccaneers’ emergency plan going forward.
