It appears that the starting quarterback job for the Pittsburgh Steelers is still up for grabs a little over two weeks before the start of the 2022 season. Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has made it clear with his comments on Tuesday that he believes he should be the guy to lead their organization moving forward.
Trubisky was asked how he felt about his chances of winning the starting job and revealed that he is comfortable with what he has shown in practice and preseason action to this point.
“It’s been a limited sample, but I think I’ve done a lot of great things in practice, a lot of good throws in the game,” said Trubisky via Teresa Varley of Steelers.com. “Just focus on what we can improve as a unit right now. We’re just looking to see what we can improve and keep doing that. But, I’ve done a lot of great things so far, and I feel really comfortable with where I’m at and how I’m throwing the football and how I’m learning the playbook and going through all my reads so far.”
Trubisky could certainly make an impression with a good game in the team’s final preseason game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
Head coach Mike Tomlin revealed earlier this week that the starting quarterback position could be won or lost based on their upcoming game.
Trubisky currently sits atop the team’s official depth chart followed by veteran Mason Rudolph, who is surprisingly beating out rookie first-round pick Kenny Pickett at the moment for the backup job.
Given Tomlin’s comments, we should see all three quarterbacks in their final preseason game, which will likely make for one of the most important Pittsburgh preseason games in recent memory.
