The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without quarterback Kenny Pickett for at least two games.
Pickett was injured in Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals. In the second quarter, Pickett dove for the end zone. He was hit on the play and got up limping. Pickett went to the sidelines and didn’t return, with Mitch Trubisky taking his place.
Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on the injury after the game.
“Kenny Pickett will have a surgical procedure Monday on his injured ankle and expected to be out 2-4 weeks, per sources,” Dulac tweeted.
In a way, Pickett’s season has mirrored his team’s.
Pickett’s individual numbers are far from overwhelming. He’s concluded 62% of his passes for 2,070 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions. But even after Sunday’s upset loss to the Cardinals, the Steelers are 7-5 under Pickett, who’s started every game of the season.
Trubisky, meanwhile, has played sparingly on the season. Sunday’s game marked his third appearance of the season for the Steelers. All told, he’s 29-for-49 with 273 passing yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. On Sunday against the Cardinals, Trubisky was 11-for-17 for 117 yards with one touchdown and no picks.
The Steelers are two games behind the Baltimore Ravens, who lead the AFC North. Pittsburgh does have a head-to-head win over Baltimore, with a rematch coming in Week 18. The Steelers also currently hold the first of the AFC’s three Wild Card spots. That lead, though, is precarious, with the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans all at 7-5, as well and the Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills both 6-6.
