The Denver Broncos dethroned the Kansas City Chiefs for AFC West supremacy. Unfortunately, Denver’s playoff run went left after starting quarterback Bo Nix suffered a season-ending injury in Denver’s divisional round win over the Buffalo Bills.
Denver’s offense struggled in the AFC Championship game, a loss to the New England Patriots. However, Denver’s offense was inconsistent throughout the year.
Now, in an effort to improve things next season, head coach Sean Payton is stepping down from his role as the offensive play caller, according to one prominent league insider.
“A notable change: Broncos HC Sean Payton said OC Davis Webb will be Denver’s play caller this season,” ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday evening.
Fans reacted to the change on social media.
“Sean Payton voluntarily giving up play calling is actually wild. Dude has called plays his entire career. Either he trusts Webb completely or he knows Bo Nix needs more freedom to operate. Huge statement either way,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“I speak for most Broncos fans when I say we are excited about this!” someone else added
“I love it. Broncos are gonna have a great offense to compliment their already great defense. With Sean Payton free to just manage the game and chime in with the perfect playcalls at the perfect moments, instead of always thinking of the next play and the next series,” one fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see how the move pans out in Denver.
