Not even a week after Sean McVay informed members of the Los Angeles Rams organization that he was returning as head coach, there have already been several staff changes.
A source tells NFL insider Field Yates of ESPN that offensive line coach Kevin Carberry, special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis, defensive backs coach Jonathan Cooley, assistant defensive line coach Skyler Jones and defensive assistant Lane Schulters will not be returning to the Rams in 2023.
The moves to part ways with several assistant coaches took place last week, according to The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue. Another coach that will not return is outside linebackers coach Thad Bogardus, whose contract was up and won’t be renewed, per Rodrigue.
“Since, McVay has been evaluating replacements at these positions and interviewing candidates over the last several days,” wrote Rodrigue in a tweet.
On top of those six departures, Liam Coen left his post as offensive coordinator to take the same job he had the year prior at the University of Kentucky.
These several departures come after McVay reportedly told staff members to explore other opportunities. Instead of leaving a Rams franchise that is heading toward a rebuild, like many presumed, McVay seems inclined to get Los Angeles back to the Super Bowl. In doing so, McVay has let go of a handful of staff members that were a part of a championship-winning team just a year ago.
