After seemingly following head coach Kalen DeBoer from Washington to Alabama, Ryan Grubb is returning to Washington — just not the Huskies.
Grubb, who was Washington’s offensive coordinator for the last two seasons and had taken the same job at Alabama, is reportedly cutting his tenure with the Crimson Tide short. Instead, Grubb will become the offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the news late Friday night.
There’s a lot to unpack here.
Grubb will be part of an overhauled coaching staff in Seattle. He’ll be replacing Shane Waldron, who held the job for the last three seasons. Aden Durde will be taking over as defensive coordinator, replacing Clint Hurtt. Of course, the biggest change will be Mike Macdonald, who is replacing longtime head coach Pete Carroll.
Seattle’s offense certainly has a lot of room to improve. And the general feeling on Friday was that Grubb will help bring some of that magic to the Seahawks and oversee an improvement in the offense next season.
The feeling on the Alabama side is different.
Like the Seahawks, the Crimson Tide are replacing a longtime and highly successful coach in Nick Saban. And Grubb’s departure will give DeBoer a significant challenge so soon into his Alabama tenure.
