In the return of Russell Wilson to Seattle, it was the opposing quarterback that got the victory. Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks upset the Denver Broncos 17-16 on Monday Night Football at Lumen Field.
Smith shredded the Denver defense in the first half and finished with an efficient line as a passer: 23-of-28 for 195 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a 119.5 passer rating. This comes after Smith was in a full-on battle in training camp for Seattle’s starting quarterback position with Drew Lock, who was acquired in the Wilson trade.
After the Seahawks‘ win, Smith delivered an incredible quote in an interview with ESPN’s Lisa Salters:
Geno Smith: "they wrote me off, I ain't write back though" pic.twitter.com/qyczbqn596

“They wrote me off. I ain’t write back, though. That’s the problem. I ain’t write back.”
That’s an early, strong NFL Quote of the Year contender.
Smith, 31, was a second-round pick by the New York Jets in the 2013 NFL Draft. From 2013-14, he played in 30 games (starting 29) for the Jets. Since then, he’s started just six games in the NFL.
Now, Smith is the starting quarterback in Seattle, and perhaps he can rewrite the story of his career. Taking down Wilson and the Broncos in an upset victory on Monday Night Football is certainly a great start to accomplishing that.
