The Washington Commanders had a pretty rough finish to Sunday night’s loss to the New York Giants. While there was plenty of drama surrounding whether or not the referees played a role in the game, the play of quarterback Taylor Heinicke definitely put the team in a bad position while also leading some to wonder if the team might need to make a chance in order to continue competing for the playoffs.
Heinicke went 17-of-29 for 249 yards and a touchdown on the night but also lost two fumbles, one of which was returned for a touchdown. The other fumble came in Giants territory and head coach Ron Rivera would later say that “we can’t do that” while expecting to win games.
The Commanders aren’t planning to make a change before their game against the San Francisco 49ers as Rivera said Washington will “stick with Taylor and what we’re trying to establish” on offense. However, he did throw out the real possibility that further issues could lead to the return of Carson Wentz.
“It is something to be quite frank, I do have to think about at some point,” Rivera said, via John Keim of ESPN.com. “But if we get back on track and play the way we’ve played and do the things we’ve done, then we’ll stick where we are.”
To Heinicke’s credit, the team is 5-2-1 since he took over for Wentz following a 2-4 start. However, every win is critical from here on out and if they feel as though they need a veteran in that spot to cut down on bad decisions and mistakes, it sounds like that’ll happen.
